The album begins with "Ease yourself
and glide" which is a dreamy poppy tune. The first thing that you
notice about the album is that you have to turn it up as it sounds like
it's a bad mix. Only after a few tracks do you realize that it's intentional
and the fuzzy low tech sound is part of the overall ambience.
"Twilight
mushrooms" has a nice female vocal intro and continues as a nice
acoustic track with buoyant chorus showing strong Beatles influences.
"Spring's near" chugs along with a nice bass line and wind
sections. "Yoyo" gives an eighties feel almost a bit like
depeche mode, whereas "Ocean house" has a strong 60's ballad
feel. "stevie" strays into experimental / oriental sounds
reminding me of some of David Sylvian's material. Not sure if it sounds
like "ghosts" or the Clangers. "Platonic Rate" stands
out and indeed was a single release from the album.
Overall some nice melodies, funky beats,
interesting vocals and lots of summer vibes. The mix thing might rub
off on me on future plays, but on first impression it's quite irritating
and spoils what is otherwise a reasonable album.
