Tom Clancy
trilogy with featuring CIA agent Jack Ryan.
"The Hunt for Red October": A new , technology superior Soviet sub
is heading for the USA under the command of captain Marko Ramius (Connery).
The American Government think Ramius is going to attack. Jack Ryan (Baldwin)
has a different idea... he's trying to defect. Both the Russians and the Americans
are chasing Red October. This is a richly detailed thriller with loads of
tension. You have to concentrate a bit, but it's a good film that works well
on DVD.
"Patriot
Games": Former CIA analyst agent Jack Ryan, whilst in London with is
family on his hols is caught up in a terrorist attack on Lord Holmes ( a member
of the royal family). He saves the day and becomes a local hero. This is the
beginning of his problems as it marks him as a target for the terrorists.
The plot deepens as his family come under threat. The film is quite eclectic
jumping across countries and introducing new characters as it goes. Overall
it's a another good action packed thriller, enhanced with moody themes from
Clannad and a climatic finish.
"Clear and Present Danger": Jack Ryan's just been promoted to Deputy
Director of Intelligence for the CIA. His first assignment is to investigate
the murder of one of the President's friends, with secret ties to Columbian
drug cartels. Unknown to Ryan, the CIA have already dispatched a deadly field
operative to head up a paramilitary force against the drug lords. Caught in
the cross fire, Ryan takes matters into his own hands. Typical American thriller.
All action and no subtlety or character. It's ok as a film but nothing stunning.
The box set is well presented and you've got the obvious benefit of being
able to enjoy the trilogy of Tom Clancy films together in the right order,
etc. The other bonus is that the set is quite competitively priced. There's
not much in the way of extras apart from the theatrical trailers, but If you're
into all star casts and lots of action, this box set is for you.
