A man confesses
to an FBI agent that his Dad and Brother were responsible for a series of
gruesome, unexplained murders. The story unfolds with flashbacks to the man's
childhood, when his Dad (Bill Paxton) was sent a message from God that he
had been chosen to kill 'Demons'. He sees this as a family mission and involves
his two young children from the beginning. The story continues to unfold revealing
the odd twist on the way .
"Frailty" is a disturbing film. Bill Paxton whacking people with an axe is not particularly menacing in the scale of things, but what made me feel gripped and uneasy was how terrifying it would have been for the children. Imagine being a a young kid and your Dad comes home with an axe and a list of people "we're going to kil"l... it would be pretty mind blowing.
It's not action packed, but it builds up a subtle, dark, uneasy tension. It's well filmed with good acting, particularly by the kids. It's fairly slow and plodding at times, but for me that added to the tension.
It was scary in a kind of psychological way as this guy genuinely believes that he's doing good killing 'Demons' in the name of God and nothing including his love for his sons will get in his way. This is made even more chilling by the fact that he obviously does love his kids, but cannot see what his madness is doing to them. It's bizarre too in that if you we're going to axe demons up, the last people you'd want to involve is a couple of school kids.
Overall there's a lot more depth to this plot, than a psycho on the loose with an axe. It's moody and dark and worth a watchable 8/10
